Bulling and Suicide: The Psychological Truth

Bullying does not cause suicide. It’s much more complicated than the media and special interest groups would lead you to believe.

Bullying behavior is mean and inappropriate. You’ll get no argument from me on that. But, should it be illegal or blamed for all the consequences depicted in the press? I don’t think so.

This recent article in Psychology Today articulates the argument in a way the media chose not to. With most issues, they’re more complex than a 20-second sound bite can represent.

The emotional impulse you feel after watching or reading such a story should propel you to learn more and investigate, not react with emotional vitriol.

Executive Protection: Contingency Planning

Contingency planning by executives help to further protect them on the road. They are designed to help minimize your risk of being a victim of violent crime.

In addition to following these preventative steps, you may want to consider planning for contingencies in case an unfortunate situation does occur.

In the Marines, we first create the plan of how we’d like our mission to go. But then, we’d create numerous contingency plans or “What if…” scenarios.

How would you respond to certain scenarios?

Scenario #1: You’re walking down a street (whether in your own country of internationally) and three menacing looking men start walking right toward you. One pulls out a gun and demands your wallet and passport.

What do you do…

Scenario #2: You’re in a taxi cab and the driver is going the wrong way. When you try to tell him to turn back or go another way, he ignores you and keeps driving away from where you want to go.

What do you do…

Scenario #3: You’re driving down the street and come across an odd looking ‘road block.’ It looks more menacing than official. Several men are standing there with, what appear to be, automatic weapons.

What do you do…

~~~~~~~~~~
When I was first introduced to contingency planning years ago, I thought it was a waste of time. It wouldn’t happen to me, the scenarios are just too far fetched.
However, on my first mission, and frequently in everyday life, things rarely go as planned.
Now I’m grateful I take the extra step of planning “what if…” scenarios to better prepare for other possibilities.
You can count on things rarely going as planned.
In addition to contingency planning, it’s a good idea to consider:
Two More Elements
After reading and considering the above strategies, you may be:
  • Concerned by the possible risks to your safety.
  • Wondering if you’re capable of responding appropriately if a situation ever occurred.
  • Consider yourself a pacifist and don’t see violence against another as an option until now.
Regardless of whether you’re reluctant to enhance your self defense abilities, or if you’re gung-ho and ready to enroll in a program and buy every product you can find.  You need to consider two more elements to increase your effectiveness:
Creative Visualization:
This is the process of using your imagination to visualize certain situations and your desired responses to them.
  • Imagine different scenarios…
  • Imagine and ‘see’ how you respond to them…
Practice:
It’s been said that “practice makes perfect.” More accurately, practice makes permanent. Effective practice increases your likelihood of responding effectively under duress.
  • You might practice
  • You might imagine someone robbing you with a knife. How do you respond?
The process of Executive Protection starts before you may need it and involves a lot more than bodyguards and shoot outs. Effective protection involves anticipating as many ‘possible’ scenarios and planning appropriately for them.
Self Defense Techniques for Dorks, Geeks and Wimps
Self defense techniques are not restricted to guys with big muscles. Quite frankly, they don’t need to worry as much about self defense than someone looking more meek or vulnerable.
There are lots of groups you might consider victims; dorks, geeks, wimps, women, handicapped, young, old… and the list goes on. Anyone can be a victim and anyone can be a victor.
The effectiveness of your self defense technique lies in your ability to think and respond to an attack.
It doesn’t hurt to understand the 2 Factors Essential to Your Safety. I’d encourage to watch that video when you sign up for our newsletter.
The Dangers of CyberBullying
The dangers of Cyberbullying are presented very effectively in this video from Childnet International. While it seems their solution is to arrest the children involved, I do not think that to be an adequate response.
Making bullying or cyberbulling illegal is a flawed response. Bullying or cyberbullying by definition is subject to the interpretation of the target. It won’t be too long before we see an explosion of accusations of ‘bullying.’
Is writing a harsh review of a movie bullying? What if the same critic dislikes every movie a director puts out and writes about it on various social media sites. Is that cyberbullying?
While I understand the emotional appeal of the anti-bullying effort, what’s missing is personal responsibility. The video shows a kid who hides the bullying from everyone, and only because his mom discovered his video journal, does the issue get addressed.
Is that the message we want to send? That the target of bullying does not have to be responsible for their emotional fitness or taking action to remedy the situation. They should just let someone else find out about it and then arrest the perpetrators, even if they are children.
Bullying has a cast of characters involved in every incident. Here are some of my observations from this video that stand out.
Parental Supervision
Mom is portrayed asking her son about his welfare, but is not shown really getting involved or reviewing what he’s doing. Parents can and should be more involved with their children. They should ask specific open ended questions to inquire as to their child’s treatment by others at school and elsewhere. Parents are responsible for supervising their children and are one of the supporting cast members of bullying incidents.
Emotional Fitness
The boy in the video is represented as a hapless victim. Other like-minded children will watch and not learn from him. They will see that it’s okay to keep to yourself, that someone else will do it for you. In addition, approximately 90% of suicides, a consequence blamed on bullying, are conducted by individuals with other psychological problems. Bullying alone can not be solely responsible for someone taking their own life. The boy is not demonstrating an emotionally fit response to the bullying.
Life is Unfair
Good things happen to bad people, and bad things happen to good people. This is one of the realities of the world we live in. Life is not fair nor can everything be equal. The perpetrators in this video (girls) acted inappropriately toward this boy. Is it a crime? If so, lock up most people since few have not acted abusively toward others.
I would have liked to see other kids step in, or teachers who witnessed one of these episodes, speak up and let all involved know it was unacceptable behavior.
“It ruins lives…”
This statement concerned me a lot. Bullying ruins lives? No, how someone interprets the actions of others can ruin that person’s life. Again, this statement is about transferring responsibility for one’s own welfare to someone else.
Should it be illegal?
What happened to the kids in this video, did they go to jail? That’s the message sent when we see the police office show up, and the target walking down the stairs happily afterward.
Is the message, send mean kids to jail? The problem is with the word ‘should.’ Things ‘should’ be different. People ‘shouldn’t’ act this way (or that way).
The challenge with this approach is that everyday we are all doing things we ‘shouldn’t’ be doing. People can be mean. Young boys and girls pick on other kids. Governments pick on citizens and corporations pick on other competitors.
The message I’d rather see taught to individuals is how to stand up to inappropriate or unwelcome behavior, and how to help others defend themselves. This approach is about empowerment and personal responsibility, not dis-empowerment and victimization.
Note: When you sign up for our newsletter on the right-hand side of this page, you’ll gain access to several Special Reports. One is entitled “7 Effective Ways to Deal with Bullies.”
The One Way to Stop a Bully
Bullying can be effectively stopped by teaching responsibility for the well-being of others. That, according to Susan Engel and Marlene Sandstrom in a recent article in the New York Times, here.
But, is that all there is to stopping bullying? What about teaching responsibility for the well-being of ourselves? What about teaching that our emotional fitness is first and foremost, our individual responsibility?
The article does a good job of making recommendations for combating and dealing with bullies. However, I disagree with the emphasis on schools and administrators as the primary teachers. Mothers and Fathers should be the primary teachers to combat bullying behavior by their children, or teaching the targets of bullying to stand up for themselves.
Whether that means saying ‘no’ to the bully or bullies, or asking appropriate personnel for help.
Enabling the targets of bullying does little to teach them the skills necessary to deal with the next incident of bullying… or the next. A simple look around will show bullying is everywhere.
The article sites a school yard experiment that measured bullying incidents 4-1/2 times per hour on the playground. Another poll showed 75% involved in bullying related interactions. Looking at how governments and various political groups behave, it’s clear that bullying is part of the culture.
Since bullying is subjective, proving it will turn into a popularity contest. Whichever faction is in charge in the local jurisdiction will prevail. That is not justice, but more in line with mob rule.
I agree that teaching people to look out for each other has merit. But making me responsible for someone’s well-being (besides my children) is not empowering either.
By taking personal responsibility for yourself, and teaching personal responsibility in others, you empower everyone to deal effectively with inappropriate behavior in whatever form. Bullying is here to stay. Deal most effectively with it by developing yourself, or helping a target of bullying stand up for him or herself.
Executive Protection: High Risk Considerations
When on the road, executives should protect themselves from high risk considerations. Let’s face it, most executives don’t travel with a bodyguard detail. They rely on their own skills and knowledge to keep themselves safe (or perhaps luck).
Some of the common high risk considerations are:
Terrorism.
In doing your advance recon, you should learn the level of terrorist activity within a country. Those statistics, plus your own monitoring of the news, should allow you to better assess the threat.
Stay away from public demonstrations and avoid broadcasting your country of origin. Unwanted attention is usually not your friend.
Hostage/Hijacking.
The initiation of a hostage or hijacking operation is the most dangerous. The terrorists are high-strung and tensions are running high. While this may be the best time to get away, it may be the worst. Don’t draw attention to yourself (if in a group) and don’t play hero. Pay attention to where you are and begin gathering as much information as you can. It may come in handy as the situation unfolds.
High-Risk Areas.
Privacy works against you. Increase your protective posture. Stay alert and keep a look out for people following you or otherwise loitering near you. Avoid quickly approaching vehicles and exit populated areas quickly (i.e. airports, markets, etc). Be suspicious of unsolicited help. Travel in authorized or officially recognized methods and keep windows up and doors locked.
Alcohol.
It’s difficult to be vigilant and look out for your own protection if you’re under the influence of alcohol. You’re most vulnerable to attack during this stage since your senses and decision-making abilities are greatly impaired. Avoid over-indulging, but if you do, make sure you’re with trusted friends and a designated driver.
By taking a few precautions, staying aware and practicing vigilance, executives can better protect themselves from high risk scenarios playing out while they’re in the area.
The Perils of Self Defense
Self defense strategies will save your butt if you’re ever attacked. However, there’s no guarantee that legally you’ll be protected.
It doesn’t take a genius lawyer to realize he can help his client by claiming self-defense in their legal defense. Whether you’re the victim of a legitimate attack or trying to cover up a deliberate act, understand that the final authority on the legality of your actions rests with the courts.
Chances are good that if you’re reading this article, you’re one of the good guys or gals looking to empower yourself or those you care about. Be sure to sign up to the right to learn the 2 Factors Essential to Your Safety and claim one of the Special Reports I offer on the other side.
Below are some recent headlines about people defending themselves or claiming they were defending themselves. Regardless of your position, one thing to keep in mind, as I learned during my time in Special Forces, it’s better to be tried by 12 than carried by 6.
